In order to clean your Wayuu bag appropriately, the first thing you should know is the type of fabric it is made with.
I must say that I have seen some sellers claim their Wayuu bags were made of natural fibers and cotton. This is a common misconception and unlike popular belief, no Wayuu bag is made of natural fibers or cotton. After a little bit of investigation, I found out that all original Wayuu bags produced in the region of La Guajira are made from threads of a single big fabric company.
The threads sold to make Wayuu bags are acrylic, a synthetic fiber synthetic. Although, it doesn’t sound sexy or exotic, it’s a much better option than natural fiber.
Synthetic fiber is a little bit water repellent, holds color better than natural fibers and has great durability. If Wayuu bags were made of cotton, they would lose their shape quicker and the color would fade after a few washes.
How to care for your Wayuu bag
Most sellers will tell you to spot clean and hand wash your bag. And although you can do this, I am too lazy to hand wash anything in life. If your bag is so dirty that it does need a bit of a cleaning, you can simply put it in the washing machine. Just flip it inside out and throw it in there on a cold setting. This won’t damage it what so ever.
It’ll probably come out looking brand-new. Afterward, just leave it out to airdry overnight.
TA-DA! No need to worry about caring for your Wayuu bag. If it gets a little dirty, just throw it in the washing machine. I promise it won’t lose its color and will not lose its shape.
